Dysplastic Nevi
”Abornmal Moles”

Dysplastic nevi (DN) are abnormal moles (nevi) that exhibit unusual cellular growth patterns, making them potentially precancerous. They are graded based on their level of atypia (abnormality):

- Mild dysplasia: Minimal abnormality, low risk of progression to melanoma

- Moderate dysplasia: Moderate abnormality, moderate risk of progression

- Severe dysplasia: Significant abnormality, high risk of progression

Not all DNs will turn into melanoma, but they increase the risk.

Treatment options include

- Observation with regular monitoring

- Surgical excision (removal)

- Shave excision (superficial removal)

Treatments are typically recommended for:

- Severely dysplastic nevi

- Large or growing nevi

- Nevi with unusual features or changes

- Patients with a history of melanoma or family history

Mild to moderately dysplastic nevi may be monitored with regular skin exams under the supervision of a qualified provider that specializes in dermatology.

Note: Nevi (moles) are common growths on the skin, and most are benign. However, it's crucial to monitor them for any changes or suspicious features, as they can potentially develop into skin cancer.
