Molluscum

Molluscum is a common skin infection caused by the molluscum virus (MCV). They appear as flesh-colored or white bumps can appear on the skin of both children and adults, causing discomfort and uncertainty.

We understand the concern of parents whose children are affected by molluscum. Our goal is to provide compassionate and effective care to help your child feel comfortable and confident in their own skin, and alleviate your worry as a parent.

Molluscum is considered to be contagious and can be spread through:

  • Direct skin-to-skin contact with an infected person

  • Touching contaminated objects or surfaces

  • Sharing personal items like towels, clothing, or makeup

  • Scratching or rubbing the affected area, leading to autoinoculation (spreading the virus to other parts of the body)

  • Sexual contact in adults

Causes and risk factors

  • Age: Common in children whose immune systems are still developing

  • Skin-to-skin contact with an infected person

  • Sharing personal items

  • Engaging in contact sports

Treatments

It's important to note that, in most cases, molluscum will resolve on its own within 6-12 months without treatment. However, we understand that waiting for the condition to clear up can be unsettling and may impact your daily life.

Treatments:

- Cantharidin: A blistering agent applied to the lesions to stimulate the immune system.

- Cryotherapy: : Freezing the lesions with liquid nitrogen to remove it.

- Curettage: Gentle removal of lesions

- Topical creams or ointments
