Folliculitis
This common skin condition is characterized by inflammation of the hair follicles, which can cause:
Redness and swelling around the hair follicles
Itchy or tender skin
Bumps or pustules (small, inflamed bumps)
Ingrown hairs
More prevalent in hot and humid environments due to increased sweating and moisture, folliculitis occurs when bacteria, viruses, or fungi infect the follicles. It can be superficial (affecting the upper portion of the follicle) or deep (affecting the entire follicle).
Causes
Bacterial infections (most common)
Viral infections
Fungal infections (like ringworm)
Ingrown hairs
Clogged follicles
Skin irritation or allergic reactions
Heat and humidity (folliculitis is more common in warm and humid climates, and can be exacerbated by sweating and friction)
Treatments
Topical antibiotics or antifungals
Oral antibiotics or antifungals (for more severe cases)
Warm compresses or baths
Good hygiene and skincare practices
Avoiding tight clothing and shaving
Measures to reduce heat and humidity-related irritation (such as using light, breathable clothing and staying in air-conditioned spaces)
