Lichen Planus
Lichen planus is a chronic inflammatory condition that can affect the skin, mouth, and nails. While the exact cause of lichen planus is still not fully understood, it is thought to be due to:
An abnormal autoimmune response, where the immune system mistakenly attacks healthy skin cells
Genetic predisposition, which may play a role in its development
Environmental triggers, such as stress, viral infections, or exposure to certain chemicals or metals
Allergic reactions to substances like gold, mercury, or certain medications
Underlying health conditions, like hepatitis C, diabetes, or thyroid disease
We’ve seen lichen planus manifest in different ways, including:
Cutaneous lichen planus on the skin
Oral lichen planus in the mouth
Nail lichen planus on the nails
Lichen planopilaris on the scalp
The goals of therapy are to manage symptoms, reduce inflammation, and prevent further damage.
Treatments
Topical corticosteroids to reduce inflammation and relieve itching
Systemic medications—including steroids, antibiotics, and other anti-inflammatory agents—to manage symptoms and prevent flare-ups
Light therapy to reduce inflammation and promote healing
Lifestyle changes, such as stress management, avoiding triggers, and maintaining good oral hygiene
