Lichen Planus

Lichen planus is a chronic inflammatory condition that can affect the skin, mouth, and nails. While the exact cause of lichen planus is still not fully understood, it is thought to be due to:

  • An abnormal autoimmune response, where the immune system mistakenly attacks healthy skin cells

  • Genetic predisposition, which may play a role in its development

  • Environmental triggers, such as stress, viral infections, or exposure to certain chemicals or metals

  • Allergic reactions to substances like gold, mercury, or certain medications

  • Underlying health conditions, like hepatitis C, diabetes, or thyroid disease

We’ve seen lichen planus manifest in different ways, including:

  • Cutaneous lichen planus on the skin

  • Oral lichen planus in the mouth

  • Nail lichen planus on the nails

  • Lichen planopilaris on the scalp

The goals of therapy are to manage symptoms, reduce inflammation, and prevent further damage.

Treatments

  • Topical corticosteroids to reduce inflammation and relieve itching

  • Systemic medications—including steroids, antibiotics, and other anti-inflammatory agents—to manage symptoms and prevent flare-ups

  • Light therapy to reduce inflammation and promote healing

  • Lifestyle changes, such as stress management, avoiding triggers, and maintaining good oral hygiene
