Impetigo

Impetigo is a bacterial skin infection that causes red sores, crusting, and discomfort. It's most common in children, but can affect adults too. Don't worry; with the right treatment and precautions, you can tackle impetigo and prevent its spread.

Causes

  • Staphylococcus aureus (the usual suspect)

  • Streptococcus pyogenes (group A strep)

  • Skin-to-skin contact with an infected person

  • Touching contaminated surfaces or objects

  • Insect bites or cuts that become infected

Symptoms

  • Red spots or patches

  • Blisters or sores that burst and crust over

  • Yellowish or golden crust

  • Itching or burning sensation

  • Swollen lymph nodes

Treatments

1. Topical antibiotics

  • Mupirocin (Bactroban)

  • Neosporin

  • Bacitracin

2. Oral antibiotics (for severe cases)

  • Amoxicillin

  • Cephalexin

  • Clindamycin

  • Sulfamethoxazole/Trimethoprim (generic Bactrim)

3. Home care

  • Keep the affected area clean and dry

  • Apply warm compresses

  • Use over-the-counter pain relievers (e.g., acetaminophen)


Prevention

Prevention is key:

  • Practice good hygiene (wash hands frequently)

  • Avoid close contact with infected individuals

  • Keep fingernails short and clean
