Early Detection of Skin Cancer
A Guide from Gemini Dermatology

At Gemini Dermatology, we emphasize the importance of self-screening for skin cancer, particularly melanoma. Regular self-examinations can help identify suspicious changes or growths, leading to early detection and treatment. We encourage our patients to familiarize themselves with their skin's appearance and watch for warning signs.

The ABCDs of Melanoma Detection

To aid in self-screening, we recommend using the ABCDs of melanoma detection:

A - Asymmetry: If a mole or growth is not symmetrical, it could be a sign of melanoma.

B - Border: A mole with an irregular, notched, or scalloped border may be cancerous.

C - Color: Melanomas often have multiple colors or an unusual color, such as black, dark brown, or shades of pink, red, white, or blue.

D - Diameter: Moles larger in diameter than a pencil eraser (5mm) could be melanomas.

Additional Warning Signs

In addition to the ABCDs, please be aware of:

- Evolving: Changes in size, shape, or color over time

- New: New moles or growths that appear after age 40

Importance of Prevention and Patient Awareness:

To reduce your risk of skin cancer, we recommend the following:

- Avoid suntanning and tanning beds, as they are high-risk activities for the development of skin cancer, including melanoma

- Practice sun safety measures, including:

- Regular application of SPF 40 or higher sunscreen, with reapplication every 3 hours

- Wearing UV-protected clothing

- Wide-brimmed hats

- Seeking shade, especially during peak sun hours (10am-4pm)

Through education and awareness, we aim to empower our patients to take an active role in their skin's health. By understanding the risks and signs of skin cancer, you can make informed decisions and seek professional help when needed. Moreover, you can also warn and protect loved ones by sharing your knowledge, encouraging them to self-screen and seek professional exams. Together, we can fight skin cancer and save lives.
