Mohs Surgery Post-Operative Wound Care Guide
Congratulations on taking the first step towards skin cancer treatment! As your trusted dermatologists at Gemini Dermatology, we want to ensure a smooth and speedy recovery. Please follow these guidelines for optimal wound care after your Mohs surgery:
Immediate Post-Surgery (First 72 hours)
1. Leave the bandage intact for 72 hours.
2. Elevate the affected area above heart level to minimize swelling.
Wound Care (After 72 hours)
1. Gently wash the wound with antibacterial soap and lukewarm water.
2. Pat dry with a clean towel.
3. Apply a thin layer of one of the following:
A. Petroleum jelly
B. Aquaphor
C. Bacitracin ointment
4. Avoid using Neosporin.
5. Cover with a non-stick dressing or bandage.
Additional Tips
1. Avoid strenuous activities, bending, or heavy lifting.
2. Refrain from swimming in pools, hot tubs, oceans, or lakes until further notice.
3. Avoid smoking and secondhand smoke.
4. Monitor for signs of infection:
A. Redness
B. Swelling
C. Increased pain
D. Pus
E. Fever
Follow-Up Care
1. Schedule a follow-up appointment with us as directed.
2. Attend all scheduled appointments to ensure proper wound healing and remove sutures/staples.
Note
If your Mohs surgery was performed near your eye, you may experience temporary swelling, bruising, or blistering, which should resolve within a week or two.
